Growing Beyond the Earth (GBE)

Kimberley Boys’ High School is extremely proud and excited to announce that the KHS Science Club was ranked in the top 11 performing schools in Growing Beyond the Earth – an international competition where learners present their research findings to NASA Scientists, held annually in the United States of America.

As a cherry on top of their performance, the boys were awarded a Special Merit Certificate for being an exemplary team What an amazing achievement, considering that the club was one of only two schools in Africa, to represent the continent in the competition.

Three hundred and seventy-two schools (372), across 6 continents, started the phase 1 of the GBE competition last year in September. Only 64 schools out of 372 (including our boys), made it through to phase 2: Student Research Symposium; where schools were expected to do a scientific poster to showcase their research and an oral presentation of their scientific work.

Outcome of the presentations (maximum points: 200) with the GBE and NASA Scientists were as follows:

- 11 schools (including KHS Science Club) reached a score of above 190

- 28 schools reached a score between 180 and 189

- 19 schools scored between 170 and 179.

Growing Beyond Earth is a science project run by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in partnership with NASA. Kimberley Boys’ High School participation in GBE is facilitated by GreenLab.bi, which is a project funded by the United States Mission to South Africa’s Public Affairs Section at the U.S. Consulate General in Cape Town.
